Eco-Friendly Soakaway Solutions for Driveways and Car Parks
With the increasing conversion of gardens and lawns into driveways, surface water runoff is becoming a significant issue. Similarly, businesses are seeking greener, more sustainable solutions for car parks. Eco Trade Counter offers an effective solution: a combined system of porous paving and soakaway storm crates that reduces runoff and supports eco-friendly construction.
How It Works
The system uses porous paving to enable vertical infiltration of rainwater and combines it with soakaway crates for horizontal infiltration. This two-tier approach prevents sewer and drain flooding during heavy rainfall, allowing water to redistribute into the ground naturally.
Traditional block paving may look appealing, but it contributes significantly to surface water runoff. By contrast, our system tackles the issue directly, offering a sustainable, practical alternative. It’s also an excellent way to earn credits for the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH), making it ideal for green homes and businesses.
System Layers for Optimal Performance
To create an effective EcoGrid infiltration system, the following layers are recommended:
- Existing Ground Level: Conduct a percolation test to assess soil porosity. High clay content may require alternative solutions.
- Soakaway Crates: RainCatcher crates with 20–40 tonne load-bearing capacity and a 95% void ratio, wrapped in non-woven geotextile fleece (105gsm or 200gsm for commercial applications).
- Base Layer: 500 mm of compacted Type 3 reduced fines.
- Filtration Layer: Multitrack NW8 (100gsm) or NW16 (200gsm) for hydrocarbon filtration and stabilisation.
- Sharp Sand Layer: 20 mm of compacted sharp sand.
- Porous Paving: EcoGrid E50 for load-bearing applications, from residential driveways to commercial car parks.
- Surface Layer: EcoGrid E50 filled with 10–15 mm sharp angular stone or resin-bound stone for a durable, aesthetically pleasing finish.
Benefits of This System
- Flood Prevention: Reduces strain on sewers and drains during heavy rainfall.
- Sustainability: Supports sustainable water management and CfSH certification.
- Durability: Handles light to heavy traffic, suitable for both residential and commercial applications.
- Aesthetic Options: Compatible with gravel or resin-bound finishes for a polished look.
