SuDS and Hydrocarbon Removal
Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are a cornerstone of effective water management, tackling surface water runoff, reducing flood risks, and minimising pollution. A key benefit of SuDS is their ability to remove hydrocarbons from water, an essential step in maintaining cleaner waterways.
How SuDS Support Hydrocarbon Removal
Hydrocarbon removal in SuDS relies on the activity of microbes that thrive on surfaces like plants, soil, and the layers of separation fleece within the system. These microbes denature hydrocarbons as water passes through, breaking them down efficiently.
The longer water remains in contact with these microbes, the more effective the hydrocarbon reduction becomes. Additionally, the separation membrane used in SuDS needs to meet certain standards for optimal performance, including:
- Permeability: A minimum of 110 x 10⁻³ m/s.
- Cone Drop Efficiency: A measurement of 34 mm for resilience and function.
Improving SuDS Pollution Treatment
To enhance the pollution treatment efficacy of SuDS, a four-stage filtration process is recommended:
- Angular Stone Layer: Acts as the initial filtration medium within the drainage grids.
- Sand Blind Course: A layer of sharp sand helps further refine water as it passes through.
- Thermally Bonded Membrane: Provides an effective barrier for hydrocarbon filtration.
- Type 3 Base Course: Adds stability and further supports drainage functionality.
This multi-layered approach ensures a high level of hydrocarbon removal, improving water quality while managing surface runoff effectively.
Supporting Sustainability with Permeable Paving
Permeable paving grids, used in conjunction with SuDS systems, provide a durable, environmentally friendly way to control runoff and mitigate flooding. These systems integrate seamlessly into both residential and commercial applications, offering long-lasting solutions for drainage challenges.
